SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Canadian government is seen implementing various judicial and legislative measures to advance its “Zero Waste Plastic Agenda”.
The government had published a notice of intent to issue a section 46 for the Federal Plastics Registry. The registry is intended to collect data on plastics. Accordingly, all the producers are required to provide annual report on the quantity and types of plastic they place on the Canadian market and its end-of-life management.

In advancing this agenda, the government had opened a consultation on December 30, 2023. The comment period is scheduled to close on February 13, 2024. It welcomed comments from partners, stakeholders and interested members of the public. The section 46 notice of the Federal Plastics Registry will be developed after proper consideration of the received comments.
Earlier in November 2024, the Federal Court had ruled that the order listing “plastic manufacturer items” as a toxic substance was unreasonable and unconstitutional. The government appealed this decision in early-December, citing that the lower court erred in finding the decision as unreasonable.
The ongoing year is crucial for the industry as it expects further developments on implementation of the plastics agenda and the Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations, said plastics industry experts.
