SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Bowerman Power is working with OC Waste & Recycling to develop a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production plant at the Frank R. Bowerman (FRB) Landfill. This project is called the Bowerman Power RNG Plan Project. Excess landfill gases captured at the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill are currently burned at an incineration flare station.
The proposed project is intended to further reduce the need to incinerate landfill gas (LFG) at the flare station and instead direct the captured landfill gases to SoCalGas’ existing natural gas pipeline system and allow SoCalGas to then utilize the captured landfill gas as renewable natural gas for customers. This effort will promote the beneficial reuse of existing and future landfill gas collected by the FRB Landfill, support long-term sustainability goals in the region, and help reduce Orange County’s reliance on fossil fuels.
Additionally, the Project will contribute to the California Public Utility Commission’s Renewable Gas Program to procure RNG made by methane from organic waste from landfills and other sources, reduce the volume of LFG being flared, and help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the FRB Landfill.
The RNG plant will be able to process 6,000 standard cubic feet per minute of LFG, equivalent to avoiding the GHG emissions from 60,196 tons of landfilled waste each year. A meeting was held in October in coordination with the California Environmental Quality Act to share information about the project, potential environmental impacts, and mitigation measures.
