Brownsville, Texas Shipbreaking Yard Received EU Certification

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.K.-headquartered EMR Metal Recycling’s International Shipbreaking announced that it has obtained the European Union Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) accreditation for its Brownsville, Texas shipbreaking yard. It has now become the first shipbreaking site in the U.S. to achieve this accreditation. The company had invested $30 million in the facility to gain the prestigious certification.

The facility will be of great help to EU-based ship owners as well as ships flying the flags of EU member states to responsibly recycle their ships at the end of their life, instead of directing them to distant shipbreaking beaches in Asian countries, where they are currently dismantled, allegedly by employing substandard practices.

The certification ensures that the facility conforms to highest environmental, health and safety standards. The yard recycles ships on hard surfaces, thereby preventing contamination of soil and water by pollutants such as chemicals from paints.

Chris Green, senior manager at International Shipbreaking Ltd. LLC said that its corporate culture of safety compliance coupled with very experienced staff will ensure safe and environmentally sound recycling methods. The facility will also lead to boost competitiveness of ship recycling facilities located in EU Member States, Green added.
