British Steel Pledges Investment in Technologies To Reduce Carbon Intensity

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): British Steel has committed to invest in latest range of technologies, aimed at significantly reducing carbon intensity. The low-carbon roadmap outlined by the company aims to significantly reduce its carbon dioxide intensity by 2030 and 2035, with the ultimate aim of reaching net-zero steel by 2050.

According to company press release, it has been making dedicated efforts to boost the volume of scrap used in steelmaking. These efforts will see further boost over the next two years. The increased use of HBI and scrap in iron making process will deliver significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The promotion of the re-use of steel products at the end of life will help the company in its journey towards decarbonisation.

Huiming Li, Chairman, British Steel noted that the steel products by the company play a central role in transitioning to a low-carbon, circular economy. It plans to embrace new technology and ways of working to help its drive towards phased reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, 2035 and 2050.

The company has implemented a variety of projects, including circular economy and material efficiency methodologies, to improve environmental performance. It considers decarbonisation as the biggest challenge faced in nearly 130 years of steelmaking.
