SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) emphasized the importance of continued efforts toward a global plastics treaty. The trade association expressed concern that the current round of negotiations did not result in a legally binding agreement to adequately manage plastic pollution.
In a statement, BIR stressed the significance of sustaining momentum in order to achieve a complete settlement. It expressed hope that the ongoing conversations will produce meaningful outcomes in the near future. BIR strongly supports an international legally binding framework to successfully combat plastic pollution, rather than a voluntary agreement, according to Susie Burrage OBE, President of BIR.

BIR requested comments from all parties, including the recycling industry. Furthermore, any future agreement should be capable of tackling the complete plastics lifecycle, from production to final disposal, it stated. Furthermore, BIR expressed its commitment to contributing expertise from the recycling industry.
The negotiations were halted for three reasons. First, there was no agreement on the scope of the treaty. The second point of contention centered on the concept of plastic manufacture. There was also discussion about whether the pact should include binding promises or remain voluntary.
