SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The crude steel production by Asian countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) recorded marginal decline by 2.3% in June this year, compared to the same month a year before.
The monthly production data indicates that the regional output totalled 113.297 million tonnes (Mt) during the month. This compares with the output of 116.004 Mt in June last year.
All the countries in the region except China and Vietnam recorded reduced output. The Chinese output increased by 4.5% over the previous year to total 91.579 Mt. It must be noted that the country’s steel output had totalled only 87.671 Mt in June last year. The Chinese production accounted for more than 80% of the regional total production. The second largest producer was India, which reported 26.3% year-on-year decline in output to 6.917 Mt. With a monthly output of 5.598 Mt, Japan emerged as the third leading producer in the Asian region.

The cumulative steel output from January to June this year by the region topped 641.997 million tonnes. This is modestly lower by 3% when matched with the output of 661.592 Mt in Jan-June ‘19. The three top regional steel producing countries were China (499.011 Mt), India (43.127 Mt) and Japan (42.209 Mt).
