SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Luxembourg-headquartered Armacell reached a significant recycling milestone by using 1 billion recycled PET bottles in the manufacture of various PET foam products. An event to celebrate the important milestone was held at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, which was attended by almost 80 distinguished guests from the recycling and composite industries.
The company uses patented technology, which makes use of recycled PET bottles that are rejected for reuse by the PET recycling industry. The plastic bottles are converted into structural foam products, which in turn are used in applications such as wind turbines, high-speed trains, walkways and surfboards.

Commenting on the achievement, Thomas Kessel, General Manager Armacell PET Foams reminded that the company had launched the world’s first foam cores made from 100% recycled PET way back in 2010. By reusing plastics, the company has played a key role in working towards a circular model. In addition, it has made a difference around the world by preventing plastic bottles from ending up in landfills and waterways.
