SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal announced its decision to build an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel making facility at its ArcelorMittal/Nippon Steel (AM/NS) Calvert operations in Alabama. The construction is expected to be completed in two years. Upon full operations, it will create 300 additional jobs. The company did not disclose the investment needed for the proposed expansion of the sheet steel mill.
According to company press release, the addition of the EAF will boost the production capability of the plant to 1.5 million short tons of steel slabs for the hot strip mill and a wide range of steel grades to meet Calvert’s end user requirements. It must be noted that AM/NS Calvert plant also hosts a cold rolling mill and three hot-dip galvanizing lines, in addition to the hot strip mill.
