SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker ArcelorMittal has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KIRCHHOFF Automotive on developing low carbon-emissions steel for cars and trucks.

The MoU was signed during a ceremony held at KIRCHHOFF Automotive’s plant in Iserlohn, Germany on 2nd March, 2023. The ceremony was attended by Yves Koeberle, CEO, ArcelorMittal Europe - Flat Products and Wolfgang Kirchhoff, CEO of KIRCHHOFF Automotive.
The primary focus of the agreement is to ensure strengthened collaboration between the two companies on sustainability initiatives. It also covers a wide range of development and steel solutions. The MoU will cover a project to develop and test the use of ArcelorMittal’s XCarb recycled and renewably produced Usibor1500 in the high-strength parts supplied by KIRCHHOFF Automotive supplies, mainly to leading equipment manufacturers in Europe, Asia and North America.
Yves Koeberle noted that the collaboration will help the company expand the use of low carbon-emissions steel in complex, highly engineered vehicle parts. Meantime, Wolfgang Kirchhoff commented that the collaboration with the world’s leading steel producer is a decisive step towards more sustainable mobility.
