ArcelorMittal Collaborated to Launch Latest Carbon Capture Technology

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal- the Luxembourg-based global steel and mining giant, announced that it has signed a funding agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG), BHP and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd to collaborate with the parties in the trial implementation of MHIENG’s carbon capture technology.

According to the agreement, the parties will conduct a feasibility and design study to expand the project from trial to full scale deployment. The trial will be carried out at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Gent, Belgium and another site in North America. It will focus on enhancing carbon capture and utilisation and/or storage (CCUS) technologies in the steelmaking industry. Incidentally, these technologies are said to play a vital role in curbing emissions from steelmaking blast furnaces.

Later this year, the ArcelorMittal Gent is expected to commission a scale demonstration plant, capable of capturing process gases from its blast furnace and converting them into ethanol, as part of the project’s initial phase. In the second phase, carbon dioxide from the offgases in the hot strip mill reheating furnace will be separated and captured.

ArcelorMittal aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 35% in Europe and by 25% worldwide by 2030.
