SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal Europe CEO Geert Van Poelvoorde demanded a decisive steel action plan. Speaking at ArcelorMittal Poland's 20th anniversary celebration, he stated that the assistance of the European Union (EU) for emergency trade measures is also essential to sustaining steelmaking in the region.

ArcelorMittal has made large investments to modernize and modify the steelmaking facilities during the last 20 years. The company’s Krakow hot rolling mill is the most modern mill of its kind in the entire Europe. Another feature that sets the Dąbrowa Gornicza heavy section mill apart is its ability to create rails up to 120 meters in length. The company has been able to achieve a 42% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, a 90% reduction in dust emissions, and a 40% reduction in energy consumption.
Poelvoorde remarked that European steelmakers face significant pressure, largely on account of exorbitant expenses of steelmaking and also due to the rising volume of subsidized, cheap imports that are flooding the regional markets. Only with the correct rules in place and supportive laws in place could the steel sector in the region grow. He demanded swift and decisive action to protect the sector from danger.
