Nippon Steel, Anglo American to Boost Transition to Lower Carbon Steelmaking

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Anglo American and Nippon Steel Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on accelerating the transition to lower carbon steelmaking.

As per the agreement, the two companies will hold joint research activities to explore ways to optimise premium lump ore produced by Anglo American mines, which in turn will be supplied to traditional blast furnace steelmaking facilities of Nippon Steel. The use of the high-quality raw material will lead to significant reduction in carbon emissions during the steelmaking process.

In addition, the project will focus on examining the viability of using Anglo American’s iron ore in the direct reduction iron (DRI) steelmaking process. It must be noted that the DRI route generates much lesser carbon emissions, compared with traditional blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces.

Peter Whitcutt, CEO of Anglo American’s Marketing business noted that the agreement is an important part of the company’s approach to collaborate with its customers in helping to shape a greener future for steel. The combined efforts by both the companies will pave way for sustainable steelmaking, he hoped.

It must be noted that Anglo American is a leading supplier of high-quality coal and iron ore to steel customers across the globe.
