Aluminum Recycling Plant to Pay $75K in Settlement of Alleged Violations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to latest announcement by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), a major aluminum recycling and production facility in Alabama has agreed to pay $75,000 in settlement of claims over reported environmental violations. The settlement has been reached with Constellium Muscle Shoals LLC, which operates a secondary aluminum processing facility in Muscle Shoals, Colbert County, Alabama.

The inspection at the facility by ADEM officials had revealed that the facility lacked proper records of mandatory inspections for an air pollution control device. Also, it found that the mandatory labels on its furnaces were hidden behind cabinets. The company had failed to provide requested records for several months.

Although the company expressed its disagreement with the alleged violations, it agreed to pay the agreed sum in settlement of the same.

As per agreement reached, the company will pay $75,000 as civil fine to the state. Furthermore, it has agreed to maintain compliance with its operating permit in future.

The company is required to conduct an inspection of each afterburner at least once a year. Moreover, it should provide and maintain easily visible labels for units including furnaces. The copies of records must be submitted to the Department, whenever asked for.
