SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation announced that two more of its smelters in Canada have been certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)- the prestigious third party certification program for the aluminum value chain.
According to company press release, the company’s Deschambault and Aluminerie de Bécancour (ABI) smelters in Canada have recently earned ASI’s Performance Standard certification. With this, all three smelters operated by the company in Canada have become ASI-certified. It must be noted that the Baie Comeau smelter was certified earlier in 2019. Overall, Alcoa has earned certifications for a total of 15 operating locations, including bauxite mines, alumina refineries, aluminum smelters and cast houses.
Rosa García Pineiro, Alcoa’s Vice President of Sustainability stated that earning additional third-party validation of the sustainability of our operations and products is an important milestone in its journey to redefine itself as the most sustainable upstream aluminum company. Furthermore, he thanked the Alcoans at Deschambault and ABI for their hard work in earning these certifications.
Meantime, Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer of ASI noted that the certifications are a validation of Alcoa’s commitment to sustainability practices at its workplaces and demonstration of its valued support of ASI’s Standards program.
