SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation announced partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on a project to investigate how ecosystem restoration projects can successfully contribute to biodiversity and community benefits under different environmental and social contexts.
The three-year project will be funded by a $1.5 million grant by Alcoa Foundation. It will explore the biodiversity and community benefits of existing restoration projects in Iceland and Brazil. The research institutions in both the countries will be engaged to examine existing restoration approaches and their impacts. The necessary advisory support will be provided by subject matter experts from IUCN’s academic network.
The knowledge thus gathered will be developed into a model, which could then be applied across geographies to boost confidence in restoration projects.
Commenting on the development, Rosa García Pineiro, President of Alcoa Foundation noted that the project will make significant contribution toward finding ways to successfully prevent degradation of ecosystems and resulting loss of biodiversity. Furthermore, it will help to realize the United Nations’ vision of living in harmony with nature. There is an urgent need for effective restoration projects, he added.
