Alcoa Concluded Capital Project at Quebec Smelter

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation announced completion of a capital project at its Deschambault aluminum smelter in Quebec, Canada. The infrastructure project is expected to deliver significant improvement to stability, better efficiency and boosted production.

According to news release, the $47 million capital project has helped the site to improve its operations. The works comprised installation of an upgraded electrical infrastructure and addition of a third electrical transformer to boost amperage of smelting pots and ensure increased metal production. Also, the upgrades to the environmental equipment will help the company to maintain environmental compliance even in the event of increased production in the upcoming years.

The Canadian government had contributed CA$10 million through its Strategic Innovation Fund towards the infrastructure project.

In addition to Deschambault, Alcoa has two operating smelters in Canada- Baie Comeau and Bécancour. The three smelters together have a consolidated nameplate capacity of 946,000 metric tons per year (mtpy). Incidentally, Deschambault smelter alone has a nameplate capacity of 287,000 mtpy.
