Founded in 1965, the Pocos de Caldas site comprises of a bauxite mine, alumina refinery, and aluminum casthouse, all of which passed the required assessments to earn the certification. It must be noted that the site is the company’s sole producer of aluminum powder, which is extensively used in a wide range of industrial applications. Alcoa is currently implementing press filtration for bauxite residue at the site, which in turn will lead to water savings and reduced land requirements for bauxite residue.
Commenting on the milestone achievement, Otavio Carvalheira, Alcoa’s President of Brazil and Vice President of Operations noted that the certification marks an important milestone in its efforts to ensure that all of its Brazilian operations adhere to the highest sustainability standards. Furthermore, it demonstrates its commitment to stakeholders that it always strive to operate safely to produce products that will create a more sustainable future, he added.
