SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation announced closure of its Intalco smelter in Washington State. The facility has been idled since 2020. Further to this decision, the company declared that it has begun the process to prepare the site for new redevelopment opportunities.
According to the company press release, the smelter site had operated more nearly five and a half decades. It had spent significant time evaluating options for the asset, including a potential sale. The analysis by the company suggests that the site cannot be competitive for the long-term, said Roy Harvey, President and CEO, Alcoa Corporation.

The rights to develop and own approximately 1,600 acres at the Intalco site, which includes transportation and utility infrastructure has been granted to AltaGas, which in turn assured to provide long-term, sustainable benefits to the community and the local economy.
The closure of Intalco smelter will bring Alcoa Corporation’s global consolidated capacity to 2.69 million metric tons.
