SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates significant decline in steel import permit applications during the month of November 2023.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 1.983 million net tons in November this year. This is significantly lower by around 10.2% when matched with 2.208 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with October 2023 final imports of 2.197 million net tons, the November 2023 steel import permit tonnage was down by almost 9.8%, AISI data said.
In November this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.592 million net tons, considerably lower by around 14% from the final imports total of 1.852 million net tons in October this year.
Sheet and strip all other metallic coatings reported largest increase in November permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 51%. The import permits for non-classified pipe & tubing and electrical sheet & strip too were up by 49% and 46% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding eleven-month period in 2022 include standard rails and cut length plates.
In November 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial eleven months of the current year were Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
