AISI: U.S. Steel Imports Surged in July

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The total steel imports stood at 2.421 million net tons during the month of July this year, as per the most recent statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is significantly higher by 12.5% when compared with the imports during the prior month. Also, the finished steel imports registered notable surge by 17.6% month-on-month to total 2.017 million net tons.

The finished steel product that reported highest surge in import volumes was cut length plates, whose imports during July this year recorded nearly 131% jump over the prior month. The imports of tin plates too were up by 115%. Also, imports of heavy structural shapes reported 100% surge over the prior month. The largest offshore suppliers during the month were Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Japan.

Over the 12-month period from August 2023 to July 2024, the total and finished steel imports were down by 0.7% and 8.8% respectively. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 23% in July and over the first seven months of the current year, noted AISI.

The products with significant year-to-date increases over the 12-month period from August 2023 to July 2024compared to the previous 12-month period included sheets and strip all other metallic coated and wire rods, whose imports surged higher by 44% and 28% respectively. Also, imports of sheets and strip hot dipped galvanized were up by 21%.
