AISI: Steel Import Permits Recorded Notable Dip in July

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable month-on-month decline in steel import permit applications during the month of July this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.289 million net tons in July this year. This is significantly lower by around 5.7% when matched with 2.428 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with June 2024 final imports of 2.152 million net tons, the July 2024 steel import permit tonnage was up significantly by almost 6.3%, AISI data said.

In July this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.936 million net tons, substantially higher by 12.9% from the final imports total of 1.715 million net tons in June 2024.

Tin plates reported largest increase in July permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 124%. The import permits for cut length plates and wire rods were up by 103% and 87% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding seven-month period in 2023 include sheets and strip all other metallic coated and hot dipped galvanized sheets and strips.

In July this year, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada, followed by Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Japan.
