SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) issued a statement in response to the U.S.-E.U. joint statement released after the meeting between President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in connection with the ongoing sustainable steel negotiations.
The statement noted that the U.S. steel industry appreciates the efforts of the country’s government towards negotiation of a new international agreement to address non-market excess steel capacity and carbon intensity of imported steel into the country from various countries across the globe. It expressed disappointment over E.U.’s unwillingness to agree to the proposals put forward by the U.S. to establish trade measures in order to effectively address these key issues, which it said is critical to the future of steel industries in both the countries.
AISI recognized that the negotiation process is extremely challenging. It thanked Biden administration towards an agreement that will ensure long-term viability of the American steel industry.
The association will continue to advocate for an agreement that provides meaningful and enforceable measures to restrict steel imports from countries that contribute to excess capacity and impose tariffs on carbon-intensive steel imports, the statement said.
