SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the most current Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), there was a noticeable drop in the number of applications for steel import permits in November 2024.
The permit applications totaled 2.124 million net tons in November of this year, according to data from the Commerce Department. When compared to the 2.238 million net tonnage permit tons recorded in the previous month, this is a considerable decrease of about 5.10%. The November 2024 steel import permit tonnage was a considerable decrease of over 11.3% from the October 2024 final imports of 2.396 million net tons, according to AISI data.

Compared to the final import total of 1.842 million net tons in October 2024, the import permit tonnage for finished steel in November of this year was 1.659 million net tons, a decrease of 10.0%.
Electrical sheet and strip reported largest increase in November permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 160%. The import permits for oil country goods and sheet and strip all other metallic coated were up by 74% and 51% respectively. Products that have had significant year-to-date increases in comparison to the same period in 2023 include hot-dipped galvanized sheets and strips and all other metallic coated sheets and strips.
Canada, followed by Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Vietnam, had the most applications for finished steel import permits among offshore nations in November 2024.
