SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly steel shipment data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable decline during the month of January this year compared with the same month a year before. However, the shipments surged higher marginally over the previous month.
According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.421 million net tons in January 2021. This is significantly down by 13.1% from the shipments of 8.536 million net tons in the same month in 2020. The shipments during the month recorded notable increase by 5.3% from the prior month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.050 million net tons in December last year.

The report provides month-on-month comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products. The shipments of hot rolled sheets surged higher significantly by 13% from December 2020. The shipments of cold rolled sheet surged higher by 6%, whereas those of hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip recorded 3% month-on-month decline.
Meantime, most recent weekly production statistics suggests marginal decline in raw steel production by the country during the week ended on March 6th, 2021. The domestic raw steel production during the week totalled 1.755 million net tons.
