SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): In total, 2.394 million net tons of steel were imported in October of this year, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau. Compared to the imports of the previous month, this is a noteworthy 12% increase. Additionally, the amount of finished steel imported during the month increased by 8.6% to 1.840 million net tons.

Reinforcing bars were the finished steel product with the largest increase in import quantities in October of this year, up by almost 129% from the previous month. Imports of heavy structural forms also rose by 92%. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Japan were the most prominent offshore suppliers for the month.
The total amount of steel imported increased by 1.9% during the 12-month period from November 2023 to October 2024. During this time, imports of finished steel stayed constant. The AISI analysis estimates that during the first 10 months of this year, the market share of imported finished steel was 23%.
The items with the biggest year-to-date growth, when comparing the 12-month period from November 2023 to October 2024 to the previous 12-month period, were sheets and strip hot dipped galvanized and sheets and strip all other metallic coated, whose imports rose by 37% and 55%, respectively. Wire rod imports have risen by 21%.
