SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The preliminary Census Bureau data suggests that total U.S. steel imports totalled 3.12 million net tons in the month of November this year. This is significantly higher by 13.9% from the previous month, reported the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The monthly finished steel imports were up by 9.6% at 2.583 million net tons.

The cumulative total and finished steel imports through November were 29.681 million net tons and 21.626 million net tons respectively. The total and finished steel imports surged higher by 47.1% and 46.2% respectively, over the previous year. The finished steel market share stood at 27% in November 2021 and 22% over the eleven-month period. Furthermore, AISI estimates the total and finished steel imports for the whole year 2021 at 32.4 million net tons and 23.6 million net tons respectively.
The imports of heavy structural shapes witnessed notable surge, rising by 64% from October. The other key finished steel products to see rise in import volumes were sheet and strip all other metallic coatings and cold rolled sheets, whose imports were up by 33% and 32% respectively, compared to October. Meantime, the products to witness significantly higher import volumes through November were hot rolled sheets and plates in coils.
