SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) hailed Trump administration for signing of the legislation implementing the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Thomas J. Gibson, President and CEO, AISI represented the trade body in the signing-in ceremony.
In a statement, AISI noted that the new trade deal will help to strengthen the steel industry supply chains with key customers. It will help in creating new jobs. The deal promotes increased cooperation and sharing of information among the governments of the three countries in order to effectively address circumvention and evasion of trade remedy orders. Furthermore, it will help to boost the ability of these countries in tackling surges of dumped and subsidized steel imports.
Gibson said that he is honoured to be part of the historic signing. Canada and Mexico together consume nearly 90% of the steel mill products exported from the U.S, he added.
President Donald Trump had signed the USMCA into law on Wednesday, as replacement for the quarter-century-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The signing of the deal follows several months of tough negotiations.
