AISI Hailed Introduction of “PROVE IT” Act in House

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) applauded the introduction of the “Providing Reliable, Objective, Verifiable Emissions Intensity and Transparency (PROVE IT) Act in the House.

The bill proposed by Reps. John Curtis and Scott Peters calls for a comprehensive study by the Energy Department, facilitating the comparison of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of certain locally produced goods including steel to the emissions intensity of the same goods produced in other countries.

In a statement, Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of AISI claimed that the steel produced in America is the cleanest in the world and that American steel producers making significant investment towards further reducing industry emissions. However, these investments will be at risk if American steel is undercut by dumped imports from countries with much higher emissions, he noted.

The “PROVE-IT” Act highlights the importance of policies to highlight the current imbalance in emissions. It will help to hold the high emitting producers from across the world accountable for their much higher carbon emissions. The Act will contribute towards creating an official source to verify the superior carbon efficiency of vital American industries, including steel.

AISI applauded Reps. Curtis and Peters for introducing the critical bill, which in turn will improve the accountability of the most GHG-intensive global producers.
