SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) applauded the announcement by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) to launch investigation into impacts of foreign imports of electrical steel products on national security.
In a statement, Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO, AISI noted that the investigation will help to ensure that country maintains a healthy and viable domestic electrical steel production capability. The effective maintenance of the nation’s power grid depends much on reliable supply of electrical steel. The unfair foreign trade practices have had detrimental impacts on electrical steel producers in the country. Today, AK Steel is the remaining domestic producer of electric steel, he said.

AISI thanked Secretary Ross and the members of Congress for their efforts in ensuring that the country’s power grid is not solely dependent on dumped and subsidized steel from other countries.
Also, AISI applauded the passage of two bills that promote water infrastructure projects for communities. The bills will help increase the demand for steel and create hundreds of jobs, it said. The provision in the bills will ensure that all iron and steel products used for the projects are made entirely in the U.S., it added.
