SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) welcomed the efforts by the members of the Congressional Steel Caucus in preserving tariffs on imports of foreign steel into the country. A statement to this effect was issued by Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO, AISI.
The statement noted that AISI is pleased and grateful that so many members of Congress have championed the American steel industry and its workers by supporting the preservation of the existing steel tariffs. It appreciated the bipartisan group of 37 members of Congress, led by Steel Caucus Chairman Rep. Rick Crawford and Vice-Chairman, Rep Frank J. Mrvan for sending a compelling letter to President Biden. AISI looks forward to continue to work with the Congressional Steel Caucus members to combat unfair trade and the global trade distortions in steel, it said.
The letter had highlighted the national security implications of unfairly traded imports and global steel overcapacity on the country’s steel industry and the important role played by steel tariffs in significantly reducing foreign steel imports. It had also warned that removal of existing Section 232 program will make new investments by American steelmakers in clean steel production.
