AISI Applauded WTO Ruling on Nickel Export Ban by Indonesia

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute has issued a statement in response to the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling in connection with the EU dispute challenging Indonesia’s new ruling on nickel commodity trade. It must be noted that the country had imposed ban on nickel ore exports and had called for mandatory domestic processing of nickel ore.

In a statement issued yesterday, Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO, AISI noted that the Institute welcomes the ruling by the WTO dispute resolution panel against the Indonesian ban on export of nickel ore. The restriction, coupled with requirement for domestic processing or ore, has led to distortion of global markets for nickel ore, thus badly impacting steel producers not only in the U.S., but also across the world.

AISI called upon Indonesian administration to withdraw the trade-distorting policies at the earliest.

The steel trade body appreciated the U.S. government for its active engagement as a third party in the dispute. It expressed its commitment to work closely with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) in addressing several other trade-distorting policies by governments around the world, that tend to accelerate overcapacity woes in steel sector.
