Characteristics
O1 Drill Rod, is an oil-hardening, non-deforming tool steel which can be hardened at relatively low temperatures. The most widely used grade of drill rod. It is a general purpose tool steel, outstanding for its reliability in hardening, good wear resistance, and excellent toughness.
O1 tool steel is a low alloy cold work tool steel that must be oil-quenched in heat treatment. O1 contains small amounts of manganese, tungsten, and chromium, giving O1 adequate toughness for normal tool & die uses. O1 has deep hardening properties with fine grain structure with unusual toughness. O1 has good response to heat treatment with small dimensional changes. Sizes over approximately 2 inches thick or round may exhibit a lower hardness in the interior. O1 tool steel is available in standard de-carb free rounds, flats and squares, as well as the largest size selection in ground flat stock and drill rod of all the tool steel grades.
The O1 tool steel round rod has been precision ground and polished, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A681 specifications, and has a standard tolerance. The O1 tool steel grade has better machinability than A2 tool steel. It must be hardened in oil, which can be done at relatively low temperatures for good dimensional stability. The polished finish offers a smooth surface with few imperfections. The rod has been ground to achieve the precise shape and size.
A general purpose oil hardening tool steel suitable for back up and punch holder plates. Features of this grade include a good combination of high surface hardness and toughness after hardening and tempering.
The oil-hardening die steel is characterized by dimensional stability (low movement) during hardening and high hardness response from low quenching temperatures. It offers a good combination of machinability, toughness, and abrasion resistance that makes this well known die steel ideal for many tool room applications.
Tools and dies made from O1 Drill Rod will have good wearing and abrasive qualities since the tungsten and higher chromium content gives improved wear resistance. O1 Drill Rods are ground to a surface finish of better than 40 micro inches and are free from defects and decarburization.
Features
Rockwell Hardness is about 62-64C,its Corrosion Resistance will be Low, Low Resistance to Heat, Distortion in Heat Treating is Low Softening, Medium Depth of Hardening, Medium Weldability, Medium Wear Resistance, , Medium Overall Toughness, Medium Strength, High Machinability, High Grindability, Decarburization Resistance is High.
Applications
Typical applications for O1 tool steel are blanking, forming, and trim dies, gages, slitting cutters, punches, bolster dies, knock-out pins, thread roll dies, bending dies, plastic mold dies, shims, cams, machine ways, stamps, machine parts, jigs, cutter templates, swaging dies, etc.
