ASTM A992/ASTM A572-GR 50 is a High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) Steel that is used in general structural applications when the structural will be riveted, bolted, or welded. ASTM A572-GR50 is Columbium-Vanadium Steel and is used whenever a cost savings from a weight reduction can be gained. It have a higher yield and tensile strength compared to ASTM A36. It is weldable, formable, and machinable when using appropriate techniques. ASTM A572 is also available in grades 42, 55, 60 and 65. This specification provides for a 50ksi MPA [345}] minimum yield strength and 65ksi minimum tensile strength. The higher tensile strength of A572-50 allows reduction of section thickness and weight when manufacturing parts, lowering the overall weight of the part. Theses grades are intended for riveted, bolted, or welded structures primarily in applications where extra strength or reduced end product weight is desired without foregoing strength.
APPLICATIONS
A572-50 is used in transportation and other applications that require increased strength at a lower weight. For transportation operations, it provides added payload capacity with a lower increase in equipment weight, reducing operating costs. A572-50 is also used in construction of bridges and buildings due to its strength and lower weight.
