Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Foundry Furnace Operator performs tasks required to prepare processed material samples for laboratory analysis

Specific Duties and Accountabilities

• Assist in identifying the materials to be melted and the selection of appropriate melting furnace
• After furnace is prepared by Maintenance personnel, load materials at the start of and intermittently during melting process to ensure the integrity of the sample
• Periodically test the liquidity of the melting materials and perform required mixing of contents in order to achieve a complete melt
• With assistance, empty contents of furnace into molds and remove excess flux while simultaneously extracting samples for laboratory testing
• Set aside full molds together with all related documentation to cool overnight
• Empty cooled molds; clean, paint identifying markings and stack ingots (under 50#)
• As instructed, re-melt ingots to weights of 4,000#; mold, stack, label and stage for shipping
• Maintain detailed records and reports via the company’s internal system
• May be required to perform simple maintenance on furnaces

Minimum Requirements and Skills

• High School diploma or equivalent
• 2-4 years’ experience in foundry furnace operations or a heavy industrial environment
• Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions
• Expert knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and machine guarding regulations
• Experience working with hazardous materials
• Proficiency with Excel and Word helpful

Working Conditions

• Regular exposure to noise, dust, extreme heat and fumes
• Regular exposure to molten materials
• Exposure to fumes requires wearing a respirator
• Regularly required to lift, push, pull and/or stack materials
• Regularly required to mix molten, semi-liquid materials in-process
