Landfill Superintendent in

This position plans, coordinates and directs 17 city staff and oversees contractor staff in providing seamless customer service for the disposal of municipal solid waste from City of Phoenix residents and business at the SR 85 Landfill. Responsibilities include providing timely and efficient solid waste service delivery at the City’s only operating landfill; managing airspace utilization; evaluating landfill construction and operating costs; promoting environmentally-sound solid waste activities; monitoring contracts and intergovernmental agreements; and complying with environmental and regulatory requirements. This position will work with department management and labor unions to fulfill the organization’s mission. The position works closely with other jurisdictions, industry leaders, regulatory agencies, and City of Phoenix departments and divisions. This position also serves as a community liaison by attending forums and meetings with staff and citizen groups and writing reports on the outcomes. Customer service and interaction with employees is considerable. Direct supervision is exercised over the classifications of Solid Waste Supervisor, Solid Waste Foreman and other supervisory, technical and support staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Deputy Public Works Director or Solid Waste Administrator.

SALARY

$57,283- $85,405 annually. Appointment can be made above the minimum depending upon qualifications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Three years of supervisory and administrative experience in a large landfill operating or transfer station environment.
An associate’s degree in public or environmental health, construction, engineering, business or public administration, or a related field.
An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.
Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The job requirements listed above, plus:

Environmental regulatory experience
Experience managing heavy duty equipment
Strong writing and interpersonal skills.
Strong public speaking skills.
Previous experience in the supervision of multiple levels of staff.
Contract management.
Experience with creating and maintaining statistical reports and trend analysis.
Experience preparing and monitoring budgets.
Ability to multitask while obtaining facts, analyzing evidence, and makes decisions and takes actions to correct problems.
