Bayliss Machine & Welding Company was formed in 1935 when Mr. John M. Bayliss, Sr. purchased W. T. Sanborn Company located on the corner of 19th Street and 10th Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama.  Mr. John Bayliss, Sr. was the shop foreman and had many years of experience in machine shop and repair work.  Bayliss Machine & Welding Company was a family business from the very beginning with many of his eleven children participating in all parts of the operation, from management, bookkeeping, secretary, machinist, welder, driver, to just all around "gopher".   As the years passed, Bayliss Machine became well known in the South for their superior quality work, service and dedication to their customers' needs.  When Mr. John Bayliss, Sr. died in November 1962 three of his sons, John Bayliss, Jr., Charles Bayliss and Joe Bayliss, took over the company and continued the superior quality work for which Bayliss Machine was noted. In 1970, Bayliss Machine & Welding Company moved into a new and much larger building (three and a half times the size of their old location) at 2901 8th Avenue North.  This modern facility with long oversize bays and 5 heavy duty overhead cranes was designed using Bayliss' unique experience in the repair industry. By 1980, 6,700 square feet and three additional 10 ton cranes were added to the existing facility to bring the total area to 55,000 square feet.  Charles (Mike) Bayliss, Jr. and John M. Bayliss III entered the business during this time as the third generation to operate the company. During the 1980s Bayliss Machine continued expanding their capabilities with the addition of larger equipment to better handle their customers needs.  Also Bayliss continued to enhance its relationship with equipment manufacturers including Gardner Denver and Metso. The 1990's saw Bayliss Machine grow further with the addition of 38,000 square feet in two bays serviced by four 30-ton overhead cranes.  This allowed Bayliss Machine to handle equipment weighing up to 120,000 pounds. Over the years Bayliss Machine & Welding Company has continuously increased their welding and machining capabilities without sacrificing the quality of their work.
