Zabalgarbi, SA, after a year of testing, began operating in 2005. The innovative proposal that it then offered –the SENER System– was the adaptation of the technology of the combined cycle gas plants to the modern energy recovery plants of municipal waste. In other words, it proposed a new design and a new industrial process in a unique and integrated cycle.

This modern technology qualitatively and quantitatively improves the performance of modern energy recovery plants, as was recognized by the Directorate General XVII of the European Commission, which granted the project the highest recognition and economic aid, through the Thermie Program (BAT/better available technology).

The results obtained by the first of its plants allow the Historic Territory to come closer to meeting its ultimate goal of “zero discharge” and also to guarantee that part of the electricity generation that we consume comes from renewable energy sources.
