In 1955, the construction of WISCO-the first super-large state-owned iron and steel complex established after the foundation of P. R. China, was started; on September 13, 1958, it was completed and put into production. So far, it has become a backbone state-owned enterprise under the State Council and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC). Located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in the eastern suburb of Wuhan, Hubei Province, its home plant area covers total land area of 21.17km2. Over the years, WISCO has developed a full set of advanced iron and steel production processes and equipments for mining, coking, steel-making, iron-making, rolling and supporting auxiliary facilities, making it an important production base of high-quality sheets and plates in China, and contributing a lot to the national economy and modernization of China. After merging and reorganizing Ezhou Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., Liuzhou Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., and Kunming Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., WISCO has grown into a giant enterprise group with annual output exceeding 40 million tons, and ranked 4th among its counterparts around the world. In 2010, WISCO realized total operating income of 190.7 billion Yuan and total assets of 203.8 billion Yuan, ranking 340th among the Fortune 500 companies.

 Nowadays, WISCO mainly engages in three industries including iron and steel, hi-tech industries, and international trade. Its iron and steel products comprise hundreds of varieties such as hot-rolled coil, hot-rolled section steel, hot-rolled heavy rail, plate of moderate thickness, cold-rolled coil, galvanized plate, cold-rolled oriented and non-oriented silicon steel sheet, color coated plate, and high-speed wire rod, etc. To date, WISCO has generally built up three strategic product bases; become the largest first-rate production base of silicon steel in the world; independently developed the auto sheets for medium-grade and high-grade automobiles, and; taken leading position in the production of high-performance structural steel and high-quality long products. Among them, the cold-rolled silicon steel sheet and ship plate win the honor of “Famous Brand of China”; the high-quality auto sheet, and steel products for bridge, pipeline, pressure vessel, container, cord thread, fire-resistance and weathering steel, and series steel products for electric engineering have won great fame both on domestic and overseas market, and; “Wugang Brand” has been recognized as a well-known brand in China. According to the report issued by the World Brand Lab, the “Wugang Brand”, with total brand value of 17.052 billion Yuan, ranks 56th among famous brands in the world.

 WISCO has tapped diverse related industries including coking, refractory materials, chemical engineering, sinter powder metal product, granulating slag, oxygen, rare gas, coal tar, crude benzene, ammonium sulfate. Moreover, it has engaged in other domestic and overseas businesses such as project design and construction, mechanical manufacture and processing, transportation, logistics and warehousing, automation technology, development of overseas resources, investment, and financing, etc.
