History

The jewelry business has been a Westphal tradition since 1950. My father John was a watchmaker, jeweler and gemologist and opened his own jewelry store in Herscher, Illinois. I can remember watching him work at the bench and became fascinated with the jewelry business. I grew up watching him build the Westphal reputation as a fine craftsman, with a strong devotion to quality work and outstanding service. My two brothers and I followed the family jewelry business and opened our own stores in Colorado, Illinois and Kansas.

I opened R. Westphal Jewelers in 1977 in Hutchinson, Kansas as a full service jewelry store. I graduated in 1967 from watchmakers and jewelers school at Gem City College in Quincy, Illinois, my home state. I became a graduate gemologist from Gemological Institute of America at Santa Monica, California in the fall of 1968.

I moved to Kansas and worked as a watchmaker, jeweler and gemologist in a jewelry stores until I decided to open Westphal Jewelers in 1977 in the Plaza Towers building. In 1993 we moved to our Main street location on the corner of 2nd and Main in downtown Hutchinson. The move gave us a larger showroom, and enabled us to expand our designs and servicesin order to continue offering the finest jewelry in the area.

Our dedication to giving our customers a place where they can come and feel comfortable and welcome is what has given us the opportunity to celebrate 31 years in the jewelry business. And we continue the Westphal tradition of offering the best in personal service, dedication to quality work, along with the most beautiful, high quality jewelry. Our on-site jewelry repair is all done by myself and is second to none.

I remain very active in the jewelry industry. I have been on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Jewelers Association since 1980 and President from 1987 to 1989. I have been a member of Jewelers of America since 1977. I regularly attend seminars and classes to gain further knowledge to give my customers the best knowledge and service possible when selecting a fine piece of jewelry.

In 1998, my daughter Katie joined the family business. In 2006 she received her graduate gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California. She is an Accredited Jewelry Professional, a title awarded by GIA. She is also a certified gemologist and registered jeweler with the American Gem Society. She is a member of the Kansas Jewelers Association, Jewelers of America and Women's Jewelers Association. This has given Westphal Jewelers the opportunity to call ourselves a third generation of family jewelers.

Katie began her career at the early age of 16 working as my apprentice bench jeweler. She has since become an award winning designer. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 she won Best of Show and ten other design awards in the Kansas Jewelers Association design competition.

Katie's other passion besides the jewelry business is competing in Dressage,an equestrian event. She has trained and competed since she was 9 years old and has attained a bronze, silver and gold medal in Dressage competition from the United States Dressage Federation. She represented the United States in International competition in Montreal, Canada in 2003. Katie continues to train and compete.

In 2011 my youngest daughter Julie joined the family business. She graduated with a degree in Fashion Marketing from the Art Institute of Seattle in 2011, She is an Accredited Jewelry Professional and has a background in art and design. Julie regularly attends seminars and Jewelry shows throughout the country to help advance her knowledge and creativity. Julie loves working with customers and is committed to help carry on the Westphal tradition.
