Waste Business Journal and its predecessor companies including Cambridge Environmental Group and Chartwell Information Publishers, Inc. were founded in 1991 to address the information needs of an industry in flux, then as much as it is now. At that time, the imminent implementation of new regulations spelled the doom of many older polluting dumps which led to the widespread belief that the country would soon run out of disposal space for its ever growing waste stream.
Background
Already new companies were being formed while business professionals and capital were entering the industry to address the many changes and opportunities resulting from its ultimate transition from a somewhat primitive local business to a more sophisticated vertically integrated regional and national business that it is today. Compounding the challenge was a lack of quantitative information about exactly how much landfill capacity remained, the volume of wastes being generated, how much it cost and especially what would it cost once the new regulations were implemented. We formed our company to address these needs.
Our Mission
We made it our mission to provide vital business information to the many industry stakeholders that would help guide and inform their decisions. To do this, our team of researchers calls every waste processing and disposal operation in the country on an ongoing basis. We ask about what types of wastes or materials are accepted, how much of each type, the prices charged, what kinds of equipment are employed, who owns the facility, who operates it, the market area served, remaining and operating capacity, among other questions. We compare the data we collect with those collected from other sources such as the various state regulatory agencies, the US EPA, and others to cross check and augment the information.
Our Industry Data, Products and Services
Our analysis of this time-series data serves as the basis of various reports tailored to address various segments and needs of the industry. To this end, we offer a weekly news bulletin, a monthly pricing and volume service, create individualized market reports, produce a comprehensiveindustry overview and outlook report and a directory that includes detailed profiles of every landfill, transfer station, recycling facility, waste-to-energy project, construction & demolition landfill, and many other waste processing and disposal facilities.
What we do
In short: we gather important waste industry information and try to make sense of it to make your job easier and more effective.
Market Data and Intelligence
Our researchers gather data from a wide variety of sources the most important of which are our own custom market surveys that then becomes the basis of our proprietary services and products. Our nearly twenty years of experience informs both our research and our analysis.
WBJ researchers survey a wide variety of waste processing and disposal operations across the country and in Canada to collect detailed, time-series information. Among many things we ask are what types of waste are handled, how much is accepted, what is charged for the material or how much paid for the commodity, what types of equipment are employed, market area served, operating and remaining capacity, who owns and operates the facility, and much more.
We also research the federal agencies and the various state regulatory agencies for the data they gather and sometimes publish. To better understand important industry issues and key trends, we research a wide variety of various news and industry sources, published research, consulting studies, and other reports.
Regularly Published Research Reports
The Waste Business Journal is a weekly news service and monthly journal that serves to keep you apprised of and better understand important industry developments as they occur. It examines industry trends and events, including new technology, changes in legislation, mergers and acquisitions, and much more. It also covers pricing and volumes of waste acceptance at a variety of waste processing and disposal facilities across the entire US. The data include summary statistics by state and region and type of facility. Facilities that accept 500 tons per day or more are listed individually. ($395 for an annual subscription).
We publish a report called the Waste Market Overview & Outlook 2012, which has just been updated and amended for 2012. It examines the industry by segment and contains a great deal of data, particularly time-series information that illustrates important industry trends and market drivers. The report comes in three formats: an Acrobat (pdf) file of the book, an Excel Spreadsheet with detailed data tables, and a PowerPoint presentation that contains both data and summary bullet points. The data is broken out by state, region and national and includes historical data back to 1991 and projections to 2016. ($595, includes updates). The latest update includes pricing and volumes through January 2016.
The Directory of Waste Processing & Disposal Sites 2014 details thousands of waste processing and disposal operations across the country. This report contains highly detailed profiles of every wastes processing and disposal facility in the US. The directory comes in a variety of formats that includes both a hardcopy as well as various electronic files. Those include an Excel spreadsheet and an Acrobat file such as the samples included, a database file, individual acrobat files for each of the state maps, and mapping shape files. One of our more popular reports is what we call Custom Waste Market Radius Reports. Here we employ a geographic program to select waste processing and disposal sites by proximity to a particular place or facility. We provide the client with a detailed map depicting the location of qualifying sites and include detailed profiles each facility including data on name, location, type of facility, days and hours of operation, types of waste accepted, volumes and prices charged, market area served, transportation access, remaining capacity, and the names addresses and phone numbers of both owner and operator.
