In 1876, Mr. AJ Herms (Albert-Jan to his friends) started a company that focused on cartwheeling and transport. His son, Willem Herms, took over part of the business in 1910, namely the transport department. The form of transport was then called horse traction and Willem was not only a director, but also a driver. Of course, the trips ± 75 years ago were usually carried out with a car with a power of 1 hp and a container capacity of 1 whole m³. Loading the cart was of course still done with the shovel. Due to the low power of one horsepower in relation to the working weight with a full bucket, the bucket was only half filled. The horse could not pull the full load out of the sand pit in one go. The first truck

In 1933, progress also made its appearance at Herms. The first truck, a Chevrolet, was purchased. Most of the transport consisted of sand, stone, gravel, hay and coal. After being fully trained by their father, "De Zoonen Albert-Jan Herms and Willem Herms Willemszoon" took over the business in 1952. Their only input then was their work and diligence. Under the leadership of this duo, the business was further modernized and the first wheel loader was introduced at the end of the 1950s. In 1968 the business was split into two separate companies. The eldest son, Albert-Jan Herms continued with the expedition part and Willem Herms Willemszoon (Willem Herms of the porter) took care of the transport part. By working hard day and night with his sons (who were still employed at the time), the business expanded considerably again.

Four sons

Eleven years later, in 1979, his four sons also joined the company. These are Willem Herms, Cornelis Herms, Hendrikus Herms and Eimbert Jan Herms. Two as a driver, one as a driver and one was given general management. At the time, all this happened under the supervision of their father. In 1983 the four of them took over the general management. As of 2009, the subsequent generation has also joined the management. From 2015, they will be in overall charge with their 5s.
