Virginia Tech Electric Service (VTES) provides electrical distribution facilities for the Virginia Tech campus and approximately 6,000 customers in the Town of Blacksburg.

VTES operates in a similar manner to other electric utility organizations, and most of the electric power used by VTES customers is purchased under a contract with American Electric Power Company. VTES rates are comparable to those of other electric utility providers.
There are over 1,300 “Hokie” lights and 650 street lights on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus, and more than 1,000 street lights and 370 dusk to dawn lights within the Town of Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech Electric Services has several types of service to help meet the needs of our customers.
Available for full domestic electric service through one meter to individual residential customers, including rural residential customers engaged principally in agricultural pursuits.
Available only to the space in which the sanctuary or principal place of worship is located and to all educational buildings which are physically attached by enclosed corridors or hallways to the building in which the sanctuary or principal place of worship is located.
Available for small general service customers with normal maximum electrical capacity requirements of 25 kW or less per month. When a customer being served under this schedule exceeds a normal maximum requirement of 25 kW per month for more than two months during the past 12 months, the customer will be placed on the appropriate rate schedule. This service is subject to a minimum monthly charge equal to the service charge, plus such additional charges as are derived from application of the energy charge.
Available for medium general service customers with normal maximum electrical capacity requirements exceeding 25 kW per month for more than two months during the past 12 months but less than 300 kW per month. When a customer being served under this schedule establishes or exceeds a normal maximum requirement of 300 kW per month, the customer will be placed on the appropriate rate schedule. The billing demand in kW shall be taken each month as the highest registration of a 15-minute demand meter or indicator.
This service is subject to a monthly minimum charge equal to the service charge, plus such additional charges as are derived from application of the demand charge and energy charge.
Available for large general service customers with normal maximum electrical demands of 300 kW or more.
The billing demand in kilowatts shall be taken each month as the highest 15-minute peak in kilowatts as registered during the month by a demand meter or indicator. This service is subject to a monthly minimum charge equal to the service charge, plus such additional charges as are derived from application of the demand charges and energy charge.
Signing up for service is easy. Just visit our office (with a valid photo ID) and fill out an Application for Service. Residential customers do not have to pay a deposit. Commercial customers are required to pay a deposit equal to two months of service ($25 minimum). All customers are charged a $12 service fee, which is added to the filling billing statement.
If you or someone in your service location uses a life-sustaining device prescribed by a licensed physician, notify our office at 540-231-6437 to become registered as a life support customer. Written certification from your doctor may be required. It is important that the Virginia Tech Electric Service be aware of any life-sustaining equipment at your service location so that we can reach you quickly should a power outage occur.
Do not vacate your residence without notifying VTES. To remove your name from your electric service account, you must notify our office in person or by telephone at 540-231-6437. You will be asked to provide a forwarding address or make other arrangements to receive your final billing. You are responsible for all consumption at your service location until a final reading by our service personnel is complete.
