OUR HISTORY
Vermetal's main activity is buying and selling scrap metal. Sounds simple, but the days when it was enough to drive along the street and shout 'rags and legs' are long gone, and in recent years Vermetal has evolved from an 'old iron farmer' to a real recycling company. In 1970 Hugo Moortgat started a container waste collection service. In 1985 he met the owner of the Vermetal bvba, who was thinking about his retirement. The takeover was quickly closed and the combination of a container service with a scrap company became a recycling company where service is central. Vermetal is always looking for the best solution for its customers for processing their waste (scrap, paper, wood, etc.).
In 1995 the company moved from the Viaduct Dam in the heart of Antwerp to Schelle. The new site, six times larger than the old one, provided the necessary space to grow. In the same period Luc Moortgat finished his university studies and joined the company. This combination of know-how and professional management is one of the company's success factors. In recent years several fellow scrap dealers have been bought up. Partly because of this, the volume traded could be more than tripled. At the same time, investments were made in the environment and machines. For example, two mobile demolition shears were purchased that can be used on site as well as at customers or for demolition work. The largest shears have a cutting force of more than 1,200 tons. In 2007 we got a new industrial hall and office space. Vermetal has also become an accredited center for processing end-of-life vehicles and an accredited collection point for EEEA. The company has no less than 400 containers of all shapes and sizes, various storage bins, 8 trucks, various cranes, forklifts and all kinds of tools to collect scrap and waste anywhere. Vermetal's customer base is therefore very extensive and ranges from ordinary private individuals to large petrochemical companies. All those machines also need to be operated. Hugo and Luc Moortgat are therefore very fortunate to be able to count on the help and commitment of 15 employees.
