Once inside a landfill, chemicals and heavy metals leak from e-waste, which seeps into the soil, contaminating local drinking water and groundwater systems.Component and chemical composition of electronic waste is highly variable.  Personal electronics are constructed with an assortment of components and potentially hazardous chemicals. This also makes the potential risk to public safety and environmental health highly variable.Estimated at around 2%, electronic waste occupies a seemingly insignificant portion of the United State’s 210 million tons of annual solid waste production. However, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this 2% composition of e-waste in landfills contributes upwards of 70% of overall hazardous waste production.Recent waste management legislation known as the “Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act” has been passed in New York to promote proper electronic waste handling and recycling. By January 2015, electronic waste may no longer be accepted for disposal at any New York State solid or hazardous waste facilities.
