Tinham and Co. GmbH was founded in 2015, teaming up with MacRebur® as a distributor in 2018. Founder, Kirk Tinham, has a background in technical engineering and sales and distribution. He saw an opportunity to utilise the contacts he had in the asphalt world in Switzerland to bring the product here, with the ultimate goal of making MacRebur® from Swiss waste plastic. The first stretch of MacRebur® road was laid in Zermatt on June 14th 2019 in cooperation with local firm Ulrich Imboden AG.
Switzerland has a world class recycling collection process, however unfortunately 80% of the waste plastic collected is incinerated. This creates electric power, but it also produces one tonne of C02 going into the atmosphere for every tonne of waste plastic being destroyed. By introducing MacRebur® product we aim to help reduce this statistic by reusing the waste plastic.
MacRebur® products are made from 100% waste plastic that would otherwise go to landfill or incineration. Due to extremes in temperatures Switzerland favours using Poly Modified Bitumen (PMB). PMB is produced using virgin plastic, so replacing this element with MacRebur® not only eliminates the production of new plastic, but has a positive environmental impact by recycling plastic, simultaneously enhancing or maintaining asphalt performance. The products are also used to enhance non-PMB asphalt by extending the binder mix and reducing the bitumen content.
