DESCRIPTION:
Thyssen Mining is a leading innovator in introducing new technology and methods to the mining industry, including the introduction of: roadheaders, electric-hydraulic shaft jumbos and raise boring to the North American mining industry.
COMPANY HISTORY:
Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd. (“TMCC”), a top-tier underground mining contractor in North America, is a member of the worldwide Thyssen Schachtbau group of companies, and combining resources with Thyssen operations in Germany and Australia, provides global mining solutions.
Thyssen Mining’s roots date back to shaft sinking in Germany in the late 1800’s. Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH in Germany sank its first shaft in the 1870’s and first employed ground freezing techniques in 1905. Thyssen’s freezing expertise was significant in establishing its reputation in mine shaft construction.
In the 1960’s, the Saskatchewan potash industry required expertise to allow shaft sinking through geological formations containing extremely high volumes of water. Thyssen Schachtbau exported its knowledge to Canada and ultimately established Thyssen Mining’s headquarters in Regina, Saskatchewan, sinking nine mine shafts during its initial expansionary phase into Canada.
From the 1970’s to the end of the 20th century, Thyssen Mining diversified into a full-service underground mining contractor in North America. Thyssen Mining became the dominant mining contractor in the Saskatchewan uranium sector and expanded its operations to include both the Canadian and American mining markets. In 1997, the formation of Mudjatik Thyssen Mining Joint Venture created a highly successful model to allow First Nations and Métis communities to participate in economic development opportunities in the northern Saskatchewan uranium mines.
During the 2000’s, TMCC has created or acquired joint ventures to enhance its capabilities as a full-service underground mining contractor:
CMAC-Thyssen Mining Group in Val-d’Or, Quebec services the Quebec market and provides manufacturing facilities for mining equipment.
Associated Mining Construction Inc. in Regina, Saskatchewan re-engaged Thyssen Mining in the Saskatchewan potash industry relating to shaft sinking expansion projects.
Jetcrete North America brings the expertise of shotcreting and ground support developed by Thyssen Mining’s Australian sister-company, Byrnecut Mining Australia.
Sovereign-Thyssen Joint Venture provides specialized grouting capabilities, utilizing advanced grouting materials and techniques.
In addition to its North American expansion, the Thyssen Group has extended its operations further into the European, Russian, and other global markets. The acquisition in 1990 of a majority stake in Australia’s Byrnecut Mining achieved global coverage for the group, which is also active in Africa and Southeast Asia. With a total revenue exceeding US $1.6 billion in 2013, the group is arguably the largest global underground mining contractor. The core competencies and resources of the Thyssen Schachtbau group of companies allow the group to provide global mining solutions for any underground mining and excavating demands.
