SEVAB Strängnäs Energi AB has been around for over 100 years. Here you can read a little about how everything started and about the development up to our days.

1850. As early as 1850, when the population was 1,147 people, the city of Strängnäs received its first street lighting. It was Bishop T Strömberg who had some oil lanterns erected on some streets. Over time, Bishop Strömberg considered this lighting to be unsatisfactory. He even dared to suggest such a distinct innovation as electric lighting.

1903. In December 1903, a committee was appointed to consider the matter. As a result, the council decided that a lighting system would be built in Strängnäs at a cost of SEK 51,000. The decision was appealed, but was rejected by both the County Administrative Board and King Maj.

1905. On October 28, 1905 at 17.00, Strängnäs Elverk started its operations. For the first time, electric lights were lit on the streets of Strängnäs, on two private floors and in a shop on Storgatan. The power machinery consisted of a locomotive of 70 hp, 2 generators of 30 kW each and an accumulator battery as a spare.

1907. Now the power plant was expanded with a built-in boiler and a horizontal machine of 100 - 130 hp. This was necessary because "… ..more than 100 lamps were switched on by subscribers this autumn and over 300 within the next two years… ..".

1913. On January 3, 1913, it was decided that reading of electricity meters would take place every month during the winter, ie eight times a year.

1916. July 22, 1916 Strängnäs Elverk was connected to Älvkarleby power plant's power grid. Thus, the steam engine had done its part as a power supplier.

1923-1928. On behalf of the Swedish Electricity Administration, Strängnäs City's Electricity Store started in Hotel Rogges hus on 3 May 1923. The business moved into new premises on Gyllenhjelmsgatan in 1928. The store sold electrical appliances and for a certain period also radios and televisions. Elverket also conducted installation operations. Operations decreased over time and were completely terminated when the power plant was transformed into Energi AB.

1947-1949. Electric rationing, a unique measure in the history of the Swedish electricity supply, was introduced on 29 September 1947. Rationing cards were sent out to all subscribers and did not expire until 19 February 1949.

1970-1976. Until 1969, Elverket's area of ​​activity consisted largely of the city of Strängnäs. Between the years 1970-1976, a major municipal merger took place and the plant was placed directly under the municipal board. Elverket was reorganized into a municipal company and was named Strängnäs Energiverk AB. The shares were distributed between the municipalities of Strängnäs (80 percent) and Eskilstuna (20 percent).

1986-2011. The Swedish Energy Agency has previously operated on premises at Järnvägsgatan 4 for over 40 years, but in 1986 the business moved premises on Vältstigen 1 and stayed there until the summer of 2011. At that time, the property was sold to the municipal property company and moved to current premises on Dammvägen. Nowadays the company is called SEVAB Strängnäs Energi AB.
