Sterling Steel offers many rewarding positions with competitive pay, advancement potential, and a host of benefits and incentives.
In 2002, Leggett & Platt purchased a portion of the former Northwestern Steel & Wire facility. Following major renovations in the melt shop and rod mill, the plant began operating in early 2003. Sterling produces more than 500,000 tons of wire rod annually. At the melt shop, scrap steel is melted, then refined, and cast into steel billets. These billets are sent to the rod mill to be rolled into rod. Our Electric Arc Furnace is the largest electric furnace in North America, with a capacity of 415 tons.
At the rod mill, we manufacture steel rods of varying sizes to be used as wire for our branches and our customers. Our mill boasts finishing speeds of over 19,500 feet per minute (220 mph).Sterling Steel recycles nearly 600,000 tons of steel scrap annually. Reducing and/or eliminating waste streams are goals throughout our facilities. Our customers draw our rod into wire that is used in a variety of end products, and at end of life, those products will most likely find their way back to us to be recycled again.
