In the late 1980s, illegally disposed medical waste begins washing ashore of the Atlantic Coast. Shortly thereafter the U.S. Congress passes the Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988 and the U.S. medical waste industry is born.
About the same time, Dr. James Sharp develops a business plan that focuses on helping hospitals manage their medical waste in an environmentally sound and cost effective manner; this leads to the formation of Stericycle in 1989.
In 1992, Mark Miller joins the company and accelerates our growth. Over the next 5 years, Stericycle acquires more than 9 medical waste companies and begins to build a national infrastructure. In 1996, Stericycle goes public on the NASDAQ exchange.
Between 1998 and 2000, Stericycle begins expanding into new territories. Our international footprint grows to include Mexico, Canada, and the U.K. We also launch the Steri-Safe OSHA Compliance Service, which quickly becomes a flagship offering and diversifies the company service portfolio beyond management of wastes.
In the hospital arena, Stericycle acquires BioSystems reusable sharps containers and launches Sharps Management Services. Further leveraging our core competencies in reverse logistics and compliance, Stericycle enters into the pharmaceutical returns business in 2003. Three years later, we add product recall and retrieval services to the portfolio and Stericycle Expert Solutions gets its start. Around the same time, Stericycle enters new markets in Europe, with acquisitions in the U.K.
In 2007, Stericycle stocks splits for a second time, emphasizing the strong growth of the company. In 2008, Stericycle breaks $1 billion in revenue for the first time and the company is added to the S&P 500 list.
Between 2008 and 2011, Stericycle makes acquisitions that enter the company into 6 new countries: Ireland, Chile, Portugal, Romania, Brazil, and Japan. Leveraging our expertise in hazardous waste to support both the healthcare and the Expert Returns customers, Stericycle makes its first acquisition in the hazardous waste area and gains the retail hazardous waste service line. And, in 2010, Stericycle enters the communications services space to leverage its expertise in call center management and provide additional value-added services to its healthcare customers.
Coming into 2014 and the company’s 25th anniversary, Stericycle has grown to over $2 billion in revenue and was added to the Forbes Global 200 list. The company is positioned as the one of the leading regulated waste service providers in every market served, now including the Republic of Korea. Our Expert Solutions business has completed over 4,000 recalls including the largest recall ever. Stericycle Communication Solutions is among the leading answering services in healthcare area.
