In 1946, after a long and successful career as Chairman of the Richmond Engineering Corporation, Thomas Jefferson Starke founded Steel Services, Inc. Steel Services' roots actually date back beyond Richmond Engineering to the Starke Dixie Plow Works, founded in the 1850's by Patrick Henry Starke in Richmond, VA. As the name suggests, the company was about Steel and Service. Guided by Thomas and his son, Thomas J. Starke III, the first Service Center opened in Richmond, Virginia, next door to Richmond Engineering. In 1952 the Roanoke Service Center opened and was followed in 1962 by the Norfolk Service Center. A half of a century later, we are still going strong and have opened a new Service Center in Salisbury, Maryland. These four Service Centers - Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk and Salisbury - combine their resources to give the Mid-Atlantic region the finest in metal products; but more importantly, the finest in service and customer satisfaction. Even after 55 years and three generations of leadership, Steel Services continues to focus on the original premise of product and service.

In 1987 a third generation took over the reins and has overseen a period of significant growth and stability. The three surviving grandchildren of the founder, Thomas J. Starke, IV, Terry S. Tosh, and Russell F. Starke II provide the leadership necessary to keep Steel Services true to its commitment of delivering a quality product and reliable service. Tom serves as CEO and Chairman of the Board. Josh Starke represents the fourth generation as President of the company.  The staff, facilities, equipment and inventory have never been stronger. The future of Steel Services is as bright as its past, and is certainly in good hands.
